MFC, the promotion run by Mark Pavelich, announced they will add bantamweights to their roster, today.
The Canadian based promotion will hold their first batch of bantamweight bouts in February of 2013. The event will air on AXS, the new home of MMA formerly known as HDNet.
The promotion recently relaunched the heavyweight division and the featherweight division, making it an opportune time to proceed with adding the 135lb weight class to the roster.
“The time is right to do it,” said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “We waited a long time to re-ignite the heavyweight division because at the time we dropped the division the talent pool, especially the overall athleticism, was very thin. Now the batch of heavyweights available is much better.
“We are bringing in the featherweights at MFC 35 because we found the right guys to kickstart that division with. And as we received calls and emails about the 145ers, it became clear that there is a very good crop of 135ers out there, so the decision was made to launch the bantamweights.
While no fighters have been signed to the roster, the promotion has their feelers out, ready to sign some of the world’s top bantamweights. Two matches will be held at the February event with the winners of the respective matches facing off for the championship at an event thereafter.
In a time where the lighter weight fighters are beginning to make a name for themselves, MFC will attempt to capitalize on this popularity. As aggressive as Pavelich is, and as deep as the talent pool is for the 135lb weight class, one could only expect a great round of signings for the promotion.
