And so it is…

Former Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem will meet former EliteXC Heavyweight champion Antonio Silva on Super Bowl weekend, according to UFC officials.

The match will have title implications for both fighters.  Overeem, as you will recall, failed a PED test prior to his fight with UFC champion Junior dos Santos.  He was suspended until early 2013.  In the meantime, Dos Santos defeated Frank Mir and will defend his title against Cain Velasquez in a rematch.  A win over Silva would all but guarantee him a shot at the belt against the JDS/Velasquez winner.

The fight will hitch on one major item:  whether or not the NSAC re-licenses Overeem.  One would imagine that having announced such a bout, officials have a good feeling that this will not be a problem.

UFC 156 boasts what could easily be the biggest card we have seen in some time.  Jose Aldo meets Frankie Edgar for the featherweight title, Dan Henderson meets Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans meets Rogerio Nogueria.
